Liam’s Book
(Trigger warningSuicide)
It was one of those nights where the sky was so dark it was almost purple. Usually on my
way home from class I don’t bother looking around because I don’t want anyone getting the
wrong impression, but this night was different. I looked around and my gaze settled on the
bridge that connects my town to the next. I noticed a figure on the ledge of the bridge. I began to
walk faster towards the bridge. I’m was not completely sure what compelled me to try and help
this person, but all I knew is that I had to try. I began to yell “Don’t do it. It will all be okay. Just
please get down. It was as if he could not hear me. At that point I noticed that my walk turned
into a run, but I was too late. I had just witnessed a man jump off a bridge. I immediately ran
down to the bottom of the bridge in hopes to find the man still alive, but instead all I found was a
blue leather bound book. I looked around but there was no man in sight. I found it strange how
fast he could have disappeared. Did I really witness someone commit suicide or was it just a
figment of my imagination? I stared at the blue leather book and decided on taking it home with
me. It wasn’t until I walked under a streetlight that I noticed the title of the book, “The Lessons
We Should Learn From a Dead Man.

me out.” She stared at me with a puzzling look, “Ellie, relax! What is going on you look like a
mess.” She was right I was a mess. How could I tell her what I just witnessed and how could I
possibly expect her to believe me? There is no way anyone could possibly believe me, but I tried
anyways. “I…II saw this man jump off a bridge, but when I went to go see if he was okay he
wasn’t there, instead there was a blue leather bookI was so rudely interrupted by her and her
disbelief when she started laughing uncontrollably. “You really expect me to believe that you
witnessed someone kill themselves but instead found a book? That’s ridiculous.” That’s when I
