The Bishop, Jean Valjean and Javert are three persons with very different characteristics in Les
Miserables. They take various attitudes and actions during the development of novel, therefore
such attitudes will be making different influences on society. They have different concepts,
ideals, attitudes and actions towards work and humanity. The Bishop is a virtuous and kind-
hearted person. He turns kindness into actions which makes the world a better place. Jean
Valjean, the hero of Les Miserables, inspired by the Bishop and turned to help others. He saved
fake Jean Valjean, Fantine, Cosette, Marius and Javert. Jean Valjean helps a lot of people and
makes a better world. Javert is an extreme figure who is stubborn and inexorable. He strictly
obeys to the social doctrine and has no critical thinking skills. There is only right and wrong in
his heart. When the puzzle about righteousness appears, he chooses to escape and suicide. He
makes a world worse.
With virtue and kindness, the Bishop inspires people to be good. He turns kindness into actions
which makes the world a better place. First of all, the Bishop puts others before himself. He turns
his deluxe home into hospital, and lives in a crude house. He supports the poor with most of his
salary, and remains little to making a living. Secondly, The Bishop does not care the upper class
political interests, but pays close attention to the common people’s living condition. He treats
others with the same attitude, no matter he or she is noble or not. He is willing to take Jean
Valjean in after Jean Valjean getting out of jail. Finally, the Bishop takes the action to spread the
goodness. He uses the gentle tone and practical action to guide people to be right, instead of only
