It is about time that the state government of New Jersey get with the times and legalize
marijuana for medicinal and recreational use. Marijuana is a drug that been around for
centuries and throughout the centuries people took it for a multitude of reasons. For
example, the drug was used to relieve stress, deal with pain, and help people eat. As time
moved on and our knowledge and technology expanded we also learned that marijuana
helps with other needs and isn’t as dangerous as some people believes.
One of the things we learned is that using marijuana isn’t nearly as dangerous as drinking
or smoking tobacco. Of course it is important to note that anyone that smokes marijuana
without moderation could have effects that are negative to their physical and mental
health. In comparing relative risk to alcohol and tobacco it isn’t nearly as harmful. About
500,000 people in the U.S. die per year due to cancer from smoking cigarettes and 88,000
people in the U.S. die per year due to alcohol consumption. On the other hand, there isn’t
enough data to confirm how many deaths are caused directly from marijuana. Both alcohol
and tobacco is the cause of so many deaths per year yet it is legal, marijuana doesn’t have
that reputation so why not legalize it?
