Legalizaon of Marijuana
There are many reasons as to why the legalization of marijuana shouldn’t happen. First,
marijuana use is associated with dependence, respiratory and mental illness, poor motor
performance, and impaired cognitive and immune system functioning. Marijuana is currently the
leading cause of substance dependence other than alcohol in the U.S. In 2008, marijuana use
accounted for 4.2 million of the 7 million people aged 12 or older classified with dependence on
or abuse of an illicit drug. Other research has shown marijuana smoke to contain carcinogens
and to be an irritant to the lungs. Marijuana smoke contains 50‐70 percent more carcinogenic
hydrocarbons than does tobacco smoke. THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, "hijacks and
corrupts" the natural process of endocannabinoids, a key family of chemicals that help guide the
brain in proper maturation, says Ruben Baler, a neuroscientist with the National Institute on
