Why is learning a new language important, many may ask. It is not only for fun, but also useful for
communication, travelling to dierent countries. Also it is useful for business purposes. This essay is
about the bene ts of learning a new language. Two years ago, I started learning a new language, it was
Turkish. A!er that, luckily, randomly, I travelled to Turkey. It was just an incredible experience having to
learn a language all on your own throughout internet studies and experiencing the language with $uent
speakers.
The interests of what had happened in Turkey from learning a new language were many. People of the
country started to greet me in dierent ways, than the foreigners who come with not a word known
from them. It was extremely beautiful, people actually oered me free food and tea. Many of them had
gave me amazing discounts just because I spoke it. I wasn’t $uent, and still not $uent, but I had
something that many foreigners didn’t.
Perhaps all of the foreigners who were tourists didn’t know the not an inch of the language. But the
beauty of having to learn it was fun, and useful at the same time. I had made connections with people, it
was easy to look for directions. It was also great because people were so caring and humble, compared
to the time that I went to Turkey before that, it was quite dierent.
One day, in Istanbul, I met this shop keeper. We started talking, and just a!er he knew I spoke Turkish, he
started loving me. His friend was outside ge-ng Baklava and Cay, which are traditional sweets and tea to
eat with, and they shared it with me. We had a very long and interesting conversation. A!er that, a!er
his work shi! was over, we three went to watch a football match in one of his relative’s café. It was a big
match that day, it was between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, both Turkish teams. I really enjoyed that
day, I was oered a free drink at the café as well.
