How Technology and Social Media Shape Leadership Styles for Millenials
Introduction
With social technology popular in modern day society, there has been a shift in how
people not only communicate with one another, but the way leaders are able to function within
organizations. Because social technology is mostly favored by the millennial generation, social
media and technology could possibly guide that generation to acquire certain leadership styles,
such as Transformational and Technology-based leadership that may challenge the relationship
between leaders and followers, based on Leadership Member Exchange (LMX) theory. The
millennial generation has developed a dependance for technology that has been established ever
since the day they were born. Whether their time is spent on their smartphones, laptops, texting,
posting, tweeting, or searching the web, millennials understand the importance of online
connectivity. Networking can be performed without any challenges because there is the lack of
fear or anxiety of collaborating with others and sharing common interests, as well the eagerness
to learn. When used the right way, social media can be a beneficial asset to an organization.
