It would be hard to be an effective leader without the ability to communicate with the
individuals you are chosen to lead. James C. Humes said, “The art of communication is the
language of leadership.” Leaders need to be aware of their communication skills and should
work at improving them every day. As a strong communicator it will be easier for others to

approach you and will make them want to come to you about issues. There are many different
areas of communication that a person needs to work on, some of them are listening skills,
emotional intelligence, generational communication, and gender communication.
Working on listening skills is important and will help a person understand a clear
message when someone is trying to communicate with them. So far in my professional career my
greatest strength when it comes to listening is I try to understand the whole message and I always
provide feedback to ensure that I have understood the message correctly. There was times when I
was just starting out in the work industry and would rush to work fast to get the job done. Once
in awhile a supervisor would give me directions but since I was rushing with my work I did not
understand the directions clearly because I was not listening and only heard would I thought they
wanted done. Learning from this mistake early made it easier for me to overcome and has made
