Introduction
Raghunath Verma, 70-year-old retired school teacher has been living with his family in
Madhogarh, a small town in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Mr. Verma and his family were
preparing for their daughter’s pre-wedding ceremony scheduled to take place on November
16th in a town called Bhind, located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India where the groom was
from. On November 13th, 2016 just 3 days before the pre-wedding ceremony, Mr.Verma went to
the bank to get 2 lakh Rupees ($2898) to spend towards the pre-wedding ceremony expenses. On
his attempt to get this money for the 3rd time Mr. Verma was sure of getting the money today
from the bank, no matter how many hours it took to get in front of a bank teller. Though
Mr.Verma went to the bank early in the morning, he was beaten to the counter by at least
thousand people. After waiting for straight eight hours Mr.Verma slumped to the ground as he
suffered from cardiac arrest and was rushed to the nearest health center. Mr. Verma was declared
dead on arrival.
Mr.Verma’s case is just one of hundreds of people who died in the chaos created by the
announcement made by the nations Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi on November 8th, 2016 at
20:15 IST. The announcement would make all 500 ($7.50) and 1000 ($15) Rupees (Rs.)
currency note invalid after November 8th, 2016 midnight.
