When I first met a possible friend, I learned that I utilize Kinesics, environment, haptics,
physical appearance, and artifacts. When meeting a possible love partner, I occasionally employ
physical appearance and artifacts, as well as facial expressions and proxemics.
A recent interpersonal interaction where I reacted negatively to someone’s nonverbal
communication codes was when I went to the bars with my friends and boyfriend on halloween.
When we were waiting in line to enter the next pub, a group of people were leaving and a random
female approached me to compliment my attire. When that happens, I normally feel really joyful
and appreciative since I enjoy putting effort into my appearance and expressing myself through it,
but that night I felt very uncomfortable, hurt, and disrespectful. After the female complimented
me, she got extremely near to me and grabbed my butt in a very strange and sexual way. I didn’t
have any reaction. I just nodded and left. I’m not sure if that was sexual assault, but it made me
very uncomfortable. I understand that drinking may have influenced her conduct, but there are
other ways she could have approached me to give me a good compliment without crossing any
boundary and still using proxemics.
