Racial segregation was a consistent factor in United States history. In 1865, the first bill
to give African Americans their rights was the Thirteenth Amendment which abolished slavery
(United States Courts, n.d.). Then the Fourteenth Amendment gave everyone one the right to
“due process of law” and “equal protection of the law.” African Americans were still treated
poorly and many states passed laws allowing segregation (United States Courts, n.d.). In 1896,
the Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme court case basically stated that segregation was legal. Multiple
court cases were filed after that pertaining to equality (United States Courts, n.d.). Many of
which involved educational issues. Some of these cases involved blacks not being allowed to
pursue higher education due to race(United States Courts, n.d.). These all led to one of the most
iconic Supreme Court cases, Brown v. Board of Education.
