Introduction
Walmart Inc. is one of the largest retailers in the world, and exhibits operational success in
applying its corporate vision and mission statement. Since 2022, Wal-Mart operates
approximately “10,500 stores and clubs under 46 banners in 24 countries and E-Commerce
websites and employs more than 2.3 million associates around the world (Walmart, n.d.). At
Walmart, the company is proud of its unique corporate culture that helps it becomes one of the
world’s most admire. The founder, Sam Walton, wanted people that worked at Wamart to know
that they are a stake in the business beyond just employment. Therefore, Walmart is calling them
“Associates”. Moreover, Sam Walton founded the company on four simple yet very important
beliefs: “Respect for the Individual, Service to the Customer, Strive for Excellence and Act with
Integrity” (Indeed, n.d.). With a company culture that always advocates seeing employees as
partners, respecting decisions and listening to employees' opinions. So why is Walmart criticized
for opposing the associates' rights to join unions? What are the true behind and what are the
management perspectives toward unions in Walmart?
