Monod's Kinetic Model
Objective
The Monod equation is a mathematical model for the growth of microorganisms. Using this
model, we can predict the growth of methanogens on rice fields and further the generation of
methane from these methanogens.
Introduction
a. Background
The Monod’s Kinetic model is named after Jacques Monod, a French biochemist who
won Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1965. He proposed using an equation of this
form to relate microbial growth rates in an aqueous environment to the concentration of a
limiting nutrient. The Monod equation has the same form as the MichaelisMenten equation,
but differs in that it is empirical while the latter is based on theoretical considerations. The
