The unconditioned stimulus in the experiment was when Mr. Sober would
show the slide that says, “Video” and actually mention that he is going to show the
video. The unconditioned response was the student turning the light off. The
conditioned stimulus was the lecture slide being shown without the professor
saying anything. The conditioned response was the student turning off the light
without being told to do so. There was clear evidence that this was classical
conditioning, learning through association, a process by which a neutral stimulus
becomes associated with a second stimulus and comes to elicit a similar response.
By the end of the experiment, the student associated the “video” slide with turning
off the lights so the student automatically turned off the lights whenever they saw
the slide.
