ANTH 258
Lab 2 Write Up
Part 1:
While creating my frequency seriation to order the six ceramic assemblages, I used the
assemblage’s concentration of remnants types A-D to order them. In the process of ordering the
assemblages, I decided to create a spread sheet on excel that allowed me to see each item’s
concentration of types A-D remains. During this process, I wasn’t entirely sure what type A or D
were defined as, so I decided to temporarily label type A, being the first letter in the English
alphabet, as the earliest influence or remnants on the assemblage. Consequently, I also decided to
temporarily label type D, as the latest influence on the assemblage. The table below shows the
order of the six ceramic assemblages from latest, being Assemblage Sleepy, to earliest,
Assemblage Bashful.

I decided to label Assemblage Bashful as the earliest Assemblage since it had the greatest
concentration of Type A. In labeling the second earliest Assemblage, instead of seeing which
Assemblage had a greater concentration of Type A, I decided to group Type A & B and Type C
& D influence together and categorize the remaining Assemblages using this method.
Assemblage Happy came next since its concentration of Type A & B (80%) is greater than Doc’s
(40%). Assemblage Happy also shows a transition period between Types A & C since it’s
primarily Type B but has remnants of both Type A and Type C in it. Next came Assemblage Doc
since it still had greater hints of both Type A & B than the remaining Assemblages but was
primarily embodied by Type C influence. After Assemblage Doc, I decided to put Assemblage
Sneezy since, although having some influence of Type A, it had a greater concentration Type C
than Doc. Assemblage Doc was also the first assemblage with Type D influence. Next came
Assemblage Dopey since it had a greater concentration of Types C & D than Sneezy but was
primarily focused on Type C. I decided to label Assemblage Sleepy as the latest assemblage
since it was the one with the greatest concentration of Type D, thus being the latest influence.
Part 2:
Order from oldest to youngest: 1A, 1J, 1C, 1B, 1G, 1I, 1F, 1K, 1D, 1E, 1L, 1H
Off the context given in Part 2 that states figure 1B is older than figure 1L, I decided to label 1A
