2. Define entailment of one sentence by another. Why is this so important?
Entailment is a term derived from formal logic and now often used as part of the study of semantics. All
the other essential semantic relations like equivalence and contradiction can be defined in terms of
entailment. Crystal (1998: 136) defines it as “a term refers to a relation between a pair of sentences
such that the truth of the second sentence necessarily follows from the truth of the first, e.g. I can see a
dog entails 4 ‘I can see an animal’. One can not both assert the first and deny the second”.
3. Can knowledge-based systems ever tell us whether facts are actually true?
