MGT3170_ Syndicate Case Presentation – Guidance for Students (DBI)
Organizing your syndicate
• The group that you have formed in the seminar is your ‘syndicate’
• It is the syndicate members’ responsibility to manage all aspects of the group and the
assignment; do not expect seminar tutors to intervene unless a university policy is
violated
• Only 3 presentations are allowed per seminar. Hence select the time at the earliest
• Each syndicate will prepare and present two cases during the module
o The dates for these presentations are as follows (week 11 and 12- in seminar
classes)
o Each set of cases covers topics/issues already covered in the module
The presentation case brief (assignment)
• Each case has a question/task associated with it. This question/task is the focus of your
presentation.
Selecting your cases
• Groups can choose which case they present from a list given for each presentation (see
below the list of cases for each presentation)
o Selections are made on a first-come-first-served basis
o You may choose one case from the given list
o All cases cover roughly the same broad topic areas though the emphases might
be different in each case
o Any one member of the syndicate can select the case but only the first selection
will count. If there is any confusion or conflict the seminar tutor will arbitrarily
assign a case; there is no “appeal” allowed.
Preparing the presentation
• Once you have selected the case, you should read it several times, carefully, paying
attention to any tables, graphs or charts
• Analyze the main issues in the case using the tools, techniques, frameworks and/or
models outlined in the book and/or used in the lectures
• Based on the outcome of your analyses, respond to the question/task accompanying the
case you have selected
o Answer the question asked or task required directly
o Use the analyses you have done to provide support your answer
o The idea is to show your analytical skills by using them and communicating the
results of your effort (so, for example, you will not get extra marks for describing
the five forces model but you will get marks for using it correctly, in detail, and
then presenting the results of your analysis)

• Prepare slides to accompany your presentation
o There can be three to four slides: 1) a title slide with the details of the syndicate
(names and student numbers), and 2) a small summary of case 3) a minimum of
one slide of content (answers to the question and justification) 4) conclusion
o There is no maximum number of slides but…
o The presentation is no more than 10 minutes long and all slides should be used
in those 10 minutes. No marks for slides that are not used during the
presentation
o So answer the question, or address the task, in 10 or fewer minutes
o Hint: Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse – practice and amend, practice and amend
Making the presentation
• Your syndicate will have 10 minutes to make the presentation
o Shorter presentations are acceptable and will not be penalized for duration
