Introduction
In recent years, the ketogenic diet has triggered a conversation of whether it is the best way to
maintain a healthy diet. The term ketogenic is defined as high fat, moderate to low protein,
and very low carbohydrate diet. A ketogenic diet is a diet that shifts body energy production
from glucose to ketone bodies by consuming more calories from fat than carbohydrate
(Freeman, Kossoff & Hartman, 2007). It causes the body to breakdown fat into ketone bodies
to substitute carbohydrates for metabolism (Alarim et al., 2020). According to Gershuni, Yan
& Medici (2018), the ketogenic diet is considered as a treatment for diabetes, epilepsy,
Alzheimer’s, cancer, and cardiovascular disease risk factors. It seems that it is an effective
way of maintaining good health such as weight management and preventing chronic diseases
like cardiovascular disease (Paoli, 2011). Opponents of this potion believe that too much fat
and red meat intake will increase the lipid level in the body which is an unhealthy diet to
consume in daily life (Campos, 2017). Also, a few side effects such as anxiety, sweating,
headache, and diarrhea would be caused (Alarim et al., 2020). This essay argues that the use
