Write a short synopsis of Texas’s changing economy and its role in the international trade.
In the early days of Texas, the economy was primarily land-based. Before and during Reconstruction,
cattle and cotton dominated the economy. Cotton and cattle were dominated early, but oil became a
major player in 1901 when the Spindletop oil field was tapped outside of Beaumont. Oil took over as the
major player until the decline of oil in the 1980s. After that point the economy of Texas became
diversified. With increased trade, due to NAFTA in 1984, many new fields came into Texas. Today, Texas
has become a leader in scientific and technological research and development with many industries like
software, equipment, and telecommunications taking over. The service industry tops the charts of the
Texas economy with over 76% of the private sector workforce.
How will the demographics of the state affect our politics in the future?
Since 2004, Texas has been a majority-minority state. South Texas and other border areas have already
had Hispanics start to dominate their politics. This can only be expected to grow to other areas as well.
With the primarily religion of Texas being found from its Mexican roots, the same could be said for the
increase in the population. Christianity already makes up for around 80% of the population. With this
being said, studies have also found that the majority of Christians also are Republican.
How have the two political cultures of Texas, individualism and traditionalism, been reflections classical
