The Patriot
‘The Patriot’ is a movie based during the American Revolutionary War. The movie
surrounds a family that is torn, and dragged, into the war. They had to choose, just like all
people had to during these tough times, whether to rebel against the English Army for
Independence or stand with the British. This war was a very bloody and brutal war.
In the movie Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) is a Veteran, father, and widow. At the
beginning he witnessed his son murdered by a British Officer and from there on out his family
had made their decision to join the fight and take on the rebels. His oldest son, Gabriel Martin
(Heath Ledger), Enlisted almost immediately without his fathers’ permission. Benjamin soon
followed and demanded he was the commanding officer of his son. Benjamin was able to have
such a high rank because he was a well known veteran in the French-Indian war. He was a hero.
The movie gives you just a glimpse of what family life would have been like back during
the Revolutionary War. Families were torn a part because men had to fight for their
independence. Families and children were murdered if they turned against the church. Even if
you helped the revolution at all you may be killed for treason. Time back then was not easy.
Decisions were not easily made.
The most accurate reciprocation of the war and most accurate with our readings is that
the way the military changed the way they fought. They realized that they can’t fight the British
