The Kite Runner
Sacrifice is a major theme in Khalad Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, which is determined
through the various relationships between Amir and his family. Amir feels guilt throughout the
story towards those who have made sacrifices for him. Amir is a twelve-year old living in
Afghanistan, whose goal in life is to gain the approval and affection of his father. His wealthy
father shows a lack of pride toward Amir his entire life. Amir spends a majority of his free time
with, Hassan, who would do anything to please Amir. Amir is unable to return this affection, he is
constantly teasing Hassan and treating him poorly. Later on he regrets not showing Hassan
affection, which later results in guilt.
When Amir and Hassan participate in the kite competition to attempt to win and please
