Dr. Rima Abu Nasser starts off her presentation with a bang, straight off the bat shows a picture of a
Yemeni woman leading a revolution in front of tens of thousands of people in her Abaya with her
hand up in the air. Signifying and connoting the rise of power of women in the middle east. She
even says that most people’s first reaction to the image is denying its authenticity claiming its fake,
she then re assures the class that its real and explains briefly the story of Yemen and the revolution
that’s going on.
In terms of that photograph, the fact that It reached the western world (all the way to a classroom
in Texas) all together is something, as well as this it shows the western world how women in Arab
cultures are standing up for their rights and want a revolution and new regime. However certain
obstacles and consequences would happen to these women for being brave and using social media
to get their voices out there, just like that picture of that anonymous Yemeni woman.
Honestly my real hero is Ahed Tamimi, she’s a 17 year old Palestinian activist (who started when
she was 12 however) and is widely famous for her videos and postings of her standing up to Israeli
soldiers posted online all over the globe, she became widely famous so in consequence, her house
was raided by Israeli soldiers and she was taken to jail. This is one of many consequences women or
any activist could face. Even worse is the Saudi women on a daily basis being charged and arrested
