Dear Editor,
In Gerard Jones’, “Violent Media is Good for Kids”, Jones convey his view on the positive
side of the violent media and its successful result on young children. Jones supports his
view by giving evidence using many arguments. He gives out points in where all violence
is not good, but some he would like to advocate to other people.
To begin with, Jones supports the idea of using rage and burning desire for power assist
young children to be unafraid of the world. In fact, he uses his childhood experience where
he shows that the Incredible Hulk, a character that is raging against a frightened world that
misunderstood and persecuted him, help him to be unafraid of his desires and world’s
disapproval. He uses his own experience to show that people drag themselves away from
emotion traps by engaging themselves with violent stories.
Another example, he uses his son’s personal story. When his son was in the first grade, his
friends started climbing a tree at school, but he was afraid of falling, of sharp branches,
and of the insects on the tree. Then Jones read his son the story of Tarzan, which in the end
helps his son to increase his confidence and bold enough to ascend the tree. This shows
that violent media helps young children to shape their personality and knowledge of life, in
a promising way.
Although violent media may be harmful to young children, it has the capability to shape
their attitude and behavior to be a better person. Violent media helps young children to be
unafraid of their desires, to increase their confidence, and to pull themselves out of
emotion traps. If parents begin to protect their children excessively, they will not have a
normal childhood and growing experience.
