John 1: “The Word Was God”
After the reading today, I was very impressed by the sentence:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”
(John 1:1).
As you can see, the Greek word logos is translate as “word” in John 1:1. Many people
believe that the word logos refers to Jesus Christ (some versions of the New Testament
even write “Jesus Christ” in John 1:1). However, I think that belief is not right because, if
we say “Word” is “Jesus Christ”, we actually admit that “Jesus Christ was God”, which is
not true. As we have learned, Jesus Christ is not God, as He is the Son of God the Father.
Although Logos has very wide range of meaning and is translated in many different ways
(including account, truth, word, words, say, saying, etc. as), to me, there is no word in
English can correctly represent the Greek word logos.
In my opinion, logos is the expression, or communication, of God. This expression of God
is later represented as His Son, Jesus Christ, as saying in John 1:14 “And the Word was
made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only
begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” Jesus is an outward expression of God’s
wisdom, reason, purpose, and thoughts. Because Jesus absolutely obeyed the Father, He
represents everything that God could communicate about Himself in a human body. As
