Jennie Hobson Case Study #1
Jennie has severe symptoms of social-interaction difficulties, communication challenges and a
tendency to engage in repetitive behaviors. Her lack of spoken language interfere with her daily
life. Jennie’s early impairment included being a difficulty baby that did not want to be held. She
would throw tantrums and become aggressive. Jennie would stand in the corner for hours when
asked to do something. She failed to talk by age 3. However, medical testing revealed normal
physical functioning and motor skills. Jennie did acquire daily living skills, in spite of her
behavior problems. During this observation, Jennie’s qualitative abnormalities in communication
included: lack of development of spoken language. Jennie vocalized by making soft sounds. She
made this sounds when bored or anxious. She is able to point to express interest and spontaneous
point at things she wants from a picture book.
Jennie’s qualitative abnormalities in social interaction includes: poor eye contact, poor use of
gestures, failure to show an interest in her class work, and limited interaction with others. She
also lacked social play. Jennie’s cognitive and intelligence skills are poor. She is unable to
follow simple commands and retain the information. (yes/no, different in colors, clap hands).
However, she is able to comply with her regular routine of getting her lunch, going to the
bathroom and retrieving items in the classroom.
Jennie’s restricted and repetitive interests and behaviors includes: standing, putting her hands
over her throat, sticking out her tongue and making strange but soft sounds. When seated, she
