Week 5 Journal Entry- When to Whistle Blow
In today’s world where competition is rising, businesses are actively trying to cut down
costs and at the same time work towards the goal “generate profits for the shareholders”. To
achieve this goal firms sometimes engage in unethical or illegal activities. If an employee finds
out about a particular activity that does not sit right with him/her, what should he/she do? Should
they whistle blow, try to work it internally with the management or should they just ignore the
issue all together? The answer is not always straightforward and there are consequences to each
of the particular actions. However, I believe that there are some aspects that can be easily
identified and acted upon.
First let’s look at who a whistleblower is. A whistleblower is a person who comes
forward and shares his/her knowledge of any wrongdoing which he/she thinks is happening in
