Introduction
J.D. Salinger was born in New York in 1919 to a mixed marriage. Growing up, he
attended many different schools, usually moving onto the next one due to flunking out of
the previous, but he was finally able to find a good fit at the Valley Forge Military
Academy. After completing school, Salinger started his writing career after taking night
classes with Whit Burnett, and was later drafted into World War II. Salinger served his
time in the war and afterwards wrote the infamous The Catcher in the Rye. The
publishing of the book brought on much unwanted attention and fame, pushing him back
to his home in Cornish, New Hampshire with his wife and children, to hide away until he
