Abstract
JC Penney is one of the biggest department-store retailers and catalog merchant in the
United States. As the holiday seasons comes around, and the merchandise begins to pour into the
stores, JC Penney must fill thousands of seasonal positions. Filling these positions, could become
a complex job to fulfil, nevertheless with the help of human resources it can be accomplished. JC
Penney is respectable company with great benefits that any prospect would love to work for.

By the time Santa comes around on his sleigh, retailers have already spent months getting
ready for the holiday season. Many of the merchandise that you see in the retail stores, usually
begins pouring in around August. Even before the merchandise, retailers start planning long
before to lay plans for job recruiting during the holiday rush. JC Penney being one of the largest
retailers, hires thousands of seasonal employees. Working out the calculation for the holiday rush
is especially tough. The accurate answer differs so much on product and location, that it presents
a challenge for most retailers. JC Penney uses technology, statistics, and previous sales to
determine the amount of employees that need to be hired.
James Cash Penney, an American businessman and entrepreneur who, in 1902, founded
the J. C. Penney stores. In 1902 James began the chain of American mid-range department
stores. By 1917, the company operated 175 stores in 22 states and later grew 1,600 stores in all
48 states. With over 1,200 stores in all 50 states as well as Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Chile, J.C.
Penney Company Inc. is one the biggest department-store retailer and catalog merchant in the
United States, with licensing agreements for its products throughout the world (Insider). The
company roared in its early times in Western mining towns because it offered all goods at "one
fair price" and brought trendy goods from the East to isolated towns. Besides selling apparel for
about every size, age, or gender, they also sell house supplies, offer portrait studios, optical
centers, and salons. Most JC Penney stores are located in shopping malls, due to the popular
demand in the 20th century. In recent years, the retailer has followed the consumers trend, and
began opening some freestanding stores (Insider).
Success depends on hiring the best team in retail. To stand out from the rest, JC Penney
strives for a great team consisting of people who are passionate about delivering great products
and exceptional service to their customers. “Our mission is to deliver the best brands, products

and services by employing the best team in retail (JC Penney).” Creating a job analysis and job
description for every single job in a company could be a complex job for the human resources
team, but it is a vital step in the recruitment process. Three examples of jobs that JC Penney is
looking for is as follows:
1. Loss Prevention Associate
Responsibilities: Responsible for protecting company assets through activities
in safety, inventory recovery and internal or external theft. Essential duties
include assisting with reduction of loss of inventory, time, and assets, as well
as monitoring cameras.
Skills: Teamwork, trust, attention to detail, stable temperament, and
accountability
2. Merchandise Specialist
