Louis Armstrong and King Oliver
The album I chose to listen to was the 1992 compilation album Louis Armstrong and
King Oliver. This album consists of recordings from 1923 and 1924. The 1923 recordings were
with Louis Armstrong and King Oliver with his Creole Jazz Band. The later recordings in 1924
were recorded with Louis Armstrong and the Red Onion Jazz Babies. At the time of the 1924
recordings, Sidney Bechet and Alberta Hunter were among the legendary members of the
supergroup.
The story goes that when young Louis Armstrong arrived in Chicago from New Orleans
to join King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band, he was so intimidated after hearing the group rehearse
for the first time that he tried to flee town for fear that he couldn’t hold his own with them
