Introduction
Although China and Japan have only a short distance of water between them, there is a
long-standing history of war and conflict between these two countries. Many historians
state that their first major conflict was the Sino-Japanese War in 1894, when Japan and
China fought for supremacy of Korea and their natural resources. War then escalated in
1937 when Japan claims to have been attacked, then proceeded to invade the province of
Manchuria and killed hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians. As each country’s
history in textbook tells an individually victimized account of these war times, it is an
apparent reality that these conflicts are still far from a cooperative state of affairs. Each of
their documented histories display very different views of what caused their disputes and
when they originated, but both can agree that their history has a long and daunting past
that continues to affect their present-day relations. Currently there is a major dispute over
territory of uninhabited islands that the Chinese refer to as the Diaoyu Islands, and the
Japanese call them the Senkaku Islands. If this current conflict does not reach a resolution,
many fear that this will lead to another possible war between these feuding countries.
Without resolution or an eventual compromise, this will also have a major effect on foreign
trade relationships with other countries including the United States. This paper will explore
the early history of these two countries, how both sides of history regarding the
Sino-Japanese war oppose one another, the “Rape of Nanking”, and the current conflicts
regarding the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands. It will then explore ways that possible modern-day
warfare will not only impact both of these countries, but ways it will negatively impact
countries around the world.
Where did it Begin?
China and Japan have two very different histories. Not only culturally but ideologically.
One would not believe that this is possible based on the way the two have similarities that
bind them so closely together. They are separated by a short boat trip, and yet they feel the
other is not on the correct path nationally. This is because of the two separate rulers
throughout their separate histories of course. One culture, the Chinese, was structured on
the principles of people, family, neighbors, and nation. In contrast, Japan was structured on
