James Madison’s Federalist 51 Today
Federalist No. 51 is an essay, written by James Madison in 1788, that is part of The Fed-
eralist Papers. Federalist No. 51 addresses the threat of one branch becoming more powerful than
others. James Madison mentions checks and balances to help the issue of the threat. It allows
each branch to check authority over one another. The idea of allowing power to be shared so that
one does not have more power over another is a good thing. Even though the essay was written
over two years ago, Madison’s theories are still relevant and in use today. Implementing bills, de–
cisions like going to war. and impeachment are some examples of current use of Madison’s the-
ory.
