Jackie Robinson
All sport icons are heroes, but there is one man that made an impact and broke the color barrier
in baseball. Jackie Robinson is the man who opened up the game for African Americans and all non-
white races.
Jackie Robinson was born to parents Mallie and Jerry Robinson in 1919. His parents lived after
slavery had been abolished, but they lived in a time that was as Robinson puts it, “a newer, more
sophisticated form of slavery.” His father worked on a plantation for very little pay and was very tired
