IT IMPLEMENTATION 2
The tracking of employees’ time is a crucial function for companies, in terms of ensuring
that they can accurately and efficiently capture the amount of hours that their employees spend
working. When it comes to employee time tracking systems, employers need to make many
decisions, ranging from how much in financial resources to allocate to this specific project, to
determining which type of a tracking system would work best for their employees. These
decisions are very individual and differ from employer to employer. For this reason, employers
need to assess what decision and tracking system would work best for them, and to determine
how to best go about implementing the new system and properly managing and screening its use.
In this particular case, the company in question is evaluating whether to have one of its
employees build a time tracking system for the organization, purchase an off-the-shelf software
package, or outsource this function to an outside entity. While all three of these options have
their own advantages, they also have their unique disadvantages.
Employee time tracking systems are valuable, as they help companies to maximize their
productivity and ensure that employees are able to put forth the greatest amount of effort while
they are on the clock. With the abundant technology that is at the fingertips of employees, both in
terms of corporate assets, as well as the personal gadgets that employees own and readily bring
to work, employers need to be able to effectively control the abuse of either of these options. The
best manner in which this can be done is through the implementation of an effective employee
time tracking system, which can help companies to determine if employees are slacking off, as
well as help employers to keep their personnel accountable for the time that they spend on the
job. In this manner, time tracking software can help companies establish that employees are
actually doing what they are supposed to when managers are not looking (Colao, 2013).
IT IMPLEMENTATION 3
Having a current employee create a time tracking software is just one of the options that
are available to employers. When the company has the opportunity to create its own system that
means that it can pick and choose what specific options to include in the system. This particular
option is typically not available to companies when they purchase an off-the-shelf product.
