Is Social Networking Taking Over the World?
Introduction
In today’s society technology is becoming more of a necessity than a convenience. If you
just take a moment to look around a college campus you will most likely find that
everyone you pass by is either on their phone or has their phone at hand. Throughout my
research, I had to face my own convictions.
Personally, after choosing social media as my topic, I started to pay close attention to my
own texting habits; I was amazed to find that I was subconsciously checking my phone
like it was a chore. I felt like I had become a completely different person, a person that was
dependent on technology. I was not the little kid who loved to play outside all day
anymore;I became a typical teenager that needed her phone to go throughout the day. The
whole idea of wasting countless hours of my life on social media baffled me. That time
could be spent on special moments with my family and friends;with my dad having cancer
this time is crucial and not a second can be wasted.
Another flashback that came to mind was how my mom would always tell me, (at least 5
times a day if I was lucky), “put that phone down!”, “You could get so much work done if
you got rid of that stupid phone”. With this idea in mind, I thought, what if the generation
we grew up in could be a factor in the use of technology and the feelings toward
technology. My grandparents and parents know absolutely nothing on how to use social
media;it is hard enough for them to figure out how to text. However their generations were
not raised with technology the way that today’s generation has. So I think that age does
have a factor on the amount of usage of social media.
Not only have I been affected by social networks but, observing my roommate, I found
that she was constantly checking her phone when she was trying to do her homework; she
has once stated that her obsession with her phone has affected her grades tremendously. By
tremendously, I mean she had to drop a class. I wonder what if she did not have such
technology; would she not have to drop the class? Unfortunately that question can never be
answered because she will most likely continue to have social networks, along with the
rest of the world who uses social networks.
