Is Perseverance the Key to Survival?
“The Story of the Three Little Pigs” is a fairytale set in 1890; it takes place in England
and is focused around three pigs who venture off into the world. It starts with an old sow sending
her three pigs into the world to seek their fortune. While on their journey, the three pigs
encounter an old man who provides each of them with building materials which they then use to
construct their houses. Pig one built his house out of straw while pig two built his out of sticks,
and pig three built his out of bricks. Pig one encounters a wolf who asks to be let into the house.
When he is denied entry, he huffs and puffs and blows the house down. He then eats the pig. In
the same fashion, the wolf approaches pig two and requests permission to enter the house and is
again denied. So, he huffs and puffs and blows the house down; then, he eats the pig. The wolf
makes his journey to pig three and asks if he can come inside, but he is denied entry.
Subsequently, he huffs and puffs and puffs and huffs but cannot blow the brick house down.
Frustrated with the sturdiness of the brick house, the wolf tries to lure the pig out. He does this
by inviting the pig to three different locations, the turnip field, the apple tree and the fair. The pig
sees right through the wolf’s cunningness and leaves one hour earlier than they agreed, avoiding
the wolf each time. The pig ends up seeing the wolf at the fair and decides to hide by jumping in
a butter churn. He then rolls the butter churn down the hill frighting the wolf. Shortly after the
pig’s safe arrival home, the wolf comes knocking. He then expresses how scared he was by what
he saw at the fair. Now dying of laughter, pig three admits that he was in the churn. The wolf,

now frustrated and embarrassed, goes down the chimney. This is the ultimate triumph of the pig
as he outwits the wolf by placing a pot of boiling water at the bottom of the chimney. The wolf
falls into the water in which he is stewed and consumed by the pig. In “The Story of the Three
Little Pigs” pig three demonstrate his perseverance as he continuously outsmarts the wolf
and his mischievous intentions.
Pig three is all about perseverance, he demonstrates this by repeatedly overcoming the
wolf and his constant attacks. The pig also demonstrates his strategic nature by constructing his
house out of bricks, he puts his quick thinking to use while at the apple tree and he also displays
his bravery at the Shanklin fair. As seen in the first example, the pig built his house out of bricks.
Right away we notice that the pig is thinking ahead and is aware of the possible dangers whether
from intruders or the elements. Though it is difficult to construct a house with bricks, the pig
