Is American Psychological Research generalizable to other cultures? There are mixed
views on this issue. Gerald J. Haeffel, Erik D. Thiessen, Matthew W. Campbell, Michael P.
Kaschak, and Nicole M. McNeil believe that it is. Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, who believes that it is
not, opposes them.
The scientists, who believe that American research is generalizable, believe that research
used for one sample of humans will often be applicable to other samples of humans, especially
for basic processes. They believe that basic processes should be the main foundation for
psychological research on humans. It is proposed that basic research has clear implications for
real world issues. They subscribe to the idea that if a theory is falsifiable, it is by definition
scientific. Simple testable hypotheses are desired. Cultural context lacks strong falsifiable
