1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran

Thesis: I got to know Iran`s history because of a book which was called Persepolis. The book
showed some changes in the Iranians lifestyle and the effects on Iranian people during that
time period. The author Marjine Satrapi`s daily life reflects the negative effects on the Iranian
people.

I learned about Iran from the movie “Argo“. The background of the movie is the 1979
Islamic revolution Iranians stormed the crazy anti-American US embassy, and made more than
50 embassy staffs as hostages, including six American. After Iranian people overthrew the
king of the Pahlavi dictatorship, the country went into a situation of bloody terror. The voice
of anti-American emerged, and the people who were for the former regime started to take
bloody revenge. The country fell into chaos.
The Characteristics of the shah`s monarchy were political repression and military and
political dependence on the United States, which led people argue about it. Moreover, “The
class-based coalition underpinning its power was eroded as its policies weakened or alienated
large landowners, clerics, and bazaar merchants; and it was challenged by a growing new
middle class, working class, and immigrants who joined the urban poor. It was opposed by
liberal and religious nationalists, various communist organizations, and the followers of
Ayatollah Khomeini’s political Islam.” (Jafary)
During 15 years` expelled Khomeini back to Iran, he gave a new definition to the State after
the revolution played an important role. (Nabavi) Got rid of a dictator, but an even worse
religious devourer came in charge. Before the 1979 revolution, Iran had a free and secular
society, Iranian communists gathered together to fight against the Shah’s dictatorship.
Revolution broke out and eventually overthrew the king in 1979. Pahlavi, Khomeini came to
power. That led directly to the end of liberalization and secularization, and made Iran a
