The article “IQ: The Rank Ordering of the World,” the authors introduces how the
intelligence test was designed and affected to children, and what elements included in the test.
The first intelligence test was published by Alfred Binet with the purpose to help the children
who could not gain an advantage from public school in 1905. However, the IQ test still
influences our society today because many people are using this IQ test as a diagnostic
instrument such as a measure of some innate characteristic of the child. I think the IQ test
definitely could not apply to everyone because we are different levels and forms of education.
Nothing can define and judge oneself who he/she is as well as children should not be judged by
this IQ test. The knowledge on the IQ test may not be relevant to anything we have ever learnt
before, and therefore cannot determine whether we are an intelligent human being or not. For
example, I did a higher score on the IQ test than my brother did but it did not mean I was greater
intelligence than him because I am good at analytical and methodical and my brother is good at
creative and artistic. We cannot be equally intelligent in every aspect of life; however, we will
work together and understand what is going on in this world.
Furthermore, the authors show us how the IQ test related to the heritability. They state
the growing environment around children could affect children’s intelligence and development.
Especially, the main point that affects children’s intelligence is family background. The belief is
that if one were born into a dumb family, that he or she would be destined to be dumb for the rest
of their lives. I feel that we are born with gifts to interpret information differently, and that this is
the true determinant of IQ. If a person is unable to understand a topic immediately, it does not
mean that he or she will not understand it after studying and reviewing of the subject. While the
person who understands it easier at first is certainly at an advantage, I believe that person is still
able to succeed in society and bring helpful information to his or her genre of study.
This article reminds me the topic I wrote in the CPU class last semester is about the
carpenter parenting and the gardener parenting model. The question is what kind of parent are
