INTRODUCTORY SPEECH ASSIGNMENT
Create a well-organized 2-3-minute speech in which you introduce yourself using an
object in your life that tells us a story about who you are as a person. This object can be
anything. You may bring a picture of a person, or a pet and tell us why this picture is so
important to you. You might choose to bring your favorite shirt and share why this shirt
means so much to you. This is limited only by your imagination. Of course, please do not
bring inappropriate materials as your object. When crafting your speech, think about the
following questions:
What does this object say about me?
What story does it tell?
Why is it interesting and important?
The speech should include:
* A brief introduction consisting of an attention getting remark and a statement of
purpose with a preview of the two sections of your speech. You
should also introduce yourself by name at some point.
* An explanation of your object and why it is important to you.
* A connection on what this story is telling us about you?
* A short wrap-up with a memorable last line.
This assignment is designed to get you to identify and critically examine your positionality
as a listener, speaker, and interpreter of information. Fluency in this sort of
communication is an increasingly important job skill. This assignment is not based on the
assumption that these factors are the
most
important, the
most
dramatic, or the
only
factors that define us, but it is designed to examine how they play out in your own
