Course Description: This is an introductory Korean course, which is designed to help students acquire
fundamental skills to read, write, listen and speak in elementary level Korean. Students will learn
Korean writing system, Hangŭl, simple sentence patterns, and basic everyday conversations. By
the end of the class, students will be able to carry a short conversation about people’s
backgrounds, likes and dislikes, attributes, as well as locations, numbers and counters. Students
will also be able to talk about present, past and future events. In addition to the classroom
instruction, students will meet with a tutor or a TA to practice speaking. In accordance with the
national standards in foreign language education, all Five Cs (Communication, Cultures,
Connections, Comparisons, and Communities) will be emphasized in the course.

Course Requirements and Grading:
Percentage breakdown for course requirements:
(1) Final exam & final speaking test (17%)
(2) Midterm speaking test (8%)
(3) 4 Chapter tests (24%)
(4) 8 Vocabulary quizzes (16%)
(5) Workbook & assignments (10%)
(6) Presentations (15%) – 3 presentations (5% each)
(7) Attendance and participation (10%)
(1) Final Exam & Speaking Test (17%): A comprehensive final exam will be given during the final
exam week. A final speaking test will be scheduled at the end of the semester.
(2) Midterm Speaking Test (8%)
(3) Chapter Tests (24%): There will be four chapter tests covering two lessons at a time. Reading,
writing, listening, grammar and vocabulary will be the main component of the test.
(4) Vocabulary quizzes (16%): One vocabulary quiz will be given on each lesson (Total 8 quizzes).
No Make-up quizzes or tests unless permitted by the instructor prior to the test with a valid
reason.
(5) Workbook & Assignments (10%): Workbook will be collected on a regular basis. No late
assignment will be accepted.
(6) Presentations (15%): There will be three presentations this semester. They will be both group
presentations and individual presentations. The length of presentation may vary each time but
mostly be less than five minutes. Detailed instructions will be given in class.
(7) Attendance (10%): Attendance is taken very seriously in this class. Each class can be very
critical to your progress. You are expected to attend ALL classes and fully participate in class
activities. If you miss more than two weeks’ worth of classes (i.e., 6 class meetings), during the
entire semester, you cannot expect to get a grade better than C in this course. If you miss 3
consecutive times (i.e., 1 week), you cannot expect an A. If you have to be absent for an
unavoidable reason, please contact me in advance and if that is not possible, see, call, or email me
as early as possible before the next class meeting. Habitual tardiness or leaving class early is also
considered as absence.
