1. Jeff Deeney argues about should schools abandon “zero-tolerance” policy. He says
there’s always been bothered by some discriminatory measures and suggestions.
Which lead to Black and Latino children become easier to be punished or be treated
hardly or be expelled regularly. This “zero-tolerance” policy especially can hurt those
Black and Latino children. Some supporters say that the policy can protect the big
environment of school. However, the critics say it’s just a excuse for school they don’t
want the child. And also there’s a name be created by schools behaviors, using courts
and law departments to deal with the problem students year over year. They called
“school-to-prion pipeline”. Since 1968, a study shows that more 50% of students who
got arrest are Hispanic or African-American. Deeney said eventhough some people
may think reduce the time that punished or expelled the Black and Latino students just
make the whole school more dangerous. Actually, in some rich or white area, there’s a
different version called “Guiding Principles, A Resource Guide for Improving School
Climate and Discipline”. This one is more likely to protect the safety with restorative
movements instead of depend on hard punishments. By giving a example of “Jones
Jail”, some schools in Philadelphia used to treated problem students hardly and zero-
tolerance policy for a long time, the percentage of violence still high, however, since
they start the restorative practice, the quantities of violent behaviors dropped 90% in
one year. Deeney said the restorative practice is really helpful to reduce the crime rate
and have a great influence of school security. In conclusion, Deeney point out that
there have to be some other way to preserve security of school in stead of use hard
punishments or expel problem students. The zero-tolerance policy only can send more
problem students to their home or Juvenile hall (Jeff Deeney).
