INTERRACIAL MARRIAGE IN THE UNITED STATES CAUSES VIOLENCE AND
HATRED
Throughout society, new tendencies and behaviors are being shaped. Times have advanced
impeccably, leaving no trace of the old times in its present. One of these new tendencies is
interracial marriages. Interracial marriage is when two people from different races,
cultures, or religions get married. In the olden days of America, interracial marriage was
illegal and frowned upon in the Deep South, but eventually the Supreme Court passed a
law in 1967, saying interracial marriage was no longer banned. Since the Supreme Court’s
decision was supported by many of the states, interracial marriage became fairly common.
Despite all of the support and popularity it had among the states, I do not believe that the
idea of interracial marriage is right and it should not be allowed in the United States.
Interracial marriage opens the way to violence and hatred, improper raising of children,
and loss of cultural and traditional value.
Over the years, the mixing of different races was the cause of many conflicts and
controversies between diverse groups of people. In America, these differences became
more prominent with political movements from some Civil Rights Leaders. For example,
the worldwide political movement for equality broke out between 1950 and 1980. This
was mostly between the whites and the blacks. Segregation was very strong between these
two groups and they were separated in schools, buses, public pools, etc. After the Civil
Rights movement, segregation dissolved and marriages among the whites and blacks
became more acceptable within the American Culture, opposed to fifty years ago where “a
black man risked his life if he were to be looking at a white woman the wrong way”
(McClain). Despite the times changing and people being more accepting, there will still be
a wall of tension between these two groups. If things were to continue this same way,
many current conflicts between interracial couples could be avoided.
A major conflict that interracial couples are faced with is the difference of customs and
traditions that come from their backgrounds. This encounter causes the inability for the
couple to understand the differences of each other’s cultures. In the long run, the
disadvantage is that both people can be at a loss of what background they belong to and
the admirable rituals and customs their ancestors passed down. When these two people
cannot understand each other’s differences, a conflict can ignite in the relationship, causing
