Project Summary
This project was mainly focused on how my communication skills can be
implemented in teachable settings. During the process of my internship with
Benjamin E. Mays high school, I was able to observe the students learn far better
than when I interned with Sheltering Arms. In my reflections I compared the
learning behavior of pre – school and high school. The results that I came up with
were amazing. At an early age, the students seem to be more engaged in their
actives, but as I compared them to the older students I noticed that the interest was
no longer there. The younger students were energetic and responsive to the
activities that they were meant to participate in, although it was difficult for them
pay full attention. While at Mays high school, I expected the students to be more
independent and interested than the younger students, but they were not. During
my weeks instructing, the students gave me a very hard time. The first assignment
that I gave them from my “A1” objective was to research Tips for an effective email.
The first day that I gave the assignment only 7 people participated. This 20-minute
maximum assignment turned into the whole class period.
The next day I went to school I expected the assignment that I gave over the
weekend, A3, to be completed. I soon learned that they forgot about their task right
after they left out of the classroom. Working with these students was very difficult,
because they were uninterested in learning. I used plenty of resources to prep them
for the assignments and the exams, but since they were more focused on getting a
quick grade, many of them failed to understand why I was instructing to do these
certain tasks.
I could not use all of the students work. Based on the work samples that I
have provided, I concluded that the students do not like research projects as much
