Do Nuclear bombs deserve a Nobel peace prize?
Nuclear weapons have had an immense effect on the world, with the first nuclear bomb being dropped on
Hiroshima in 1945, revealing its devastating capability. Ever since then the topic of whether or not nuclear weapons
promote peace has been a highly contested debate with strong support for both sides. In this essay I will argue that
the invention of the nuclear bomb has made the world a safer place and therefore should be awarded the Nobel
peace prize. To support my argument I will first explain why nuclear bombs have made the world safer and that’s not
through the use of them but through their role as a deterrent, especially between nuclear states. I will then discuss
debates from the other side of the argument like the stability instability paradox which claims that although nuclear
weapons prevent major wars between the nuclear superpowers, they promote war at lower levels of conflict and
therefore could reduce peace. I will also analyse arguments from moral, rationality and safety critics of deterrence
theory and why I believe their arguments do not damage deterrence theories claim of promoting peace. I think it’s
important to define what constitutes peace and through this essay my argument is based upon peace as being
