Why are lionfish a growing problem in the Atlantic Ocean?
Lionfish are native to the Indo-Pacific oceans. The lionfish are found in warm waters of
the tropics. They have been seen along the southeastern US coast from Florida to
North Carolina. Also, in the Caribbean and parts of the Gulf of Mexico. No one knows
exactly how the lionfish got to the Atlantic Ocean, but they have an idea that it was the
people who had lionfish as pets. People have been dumping lionfish in Atlantic oceans
for 25 years. The lionfish are carnivores that feed on small crustaceans and fish. They
have been eating important fish like the snapper fish and grouper fish. NOAA
