I. Introduction
In the last two decades, foreign direct investment (FDI) has emerged as a driving
force of globalisation.The interest in specific host countries has been stimulated by both
the increase of international FDI flows and their significance as a critical aspect of
economic growth and employment creation in emerging economies,including Vietnam.
The development of FDI in Vietnam has been spectacular so far, reflecting the movement
of Vietnam into the global economy, and demonstrating that it is now a country to invest
in.This report will focus on explaining a typical FDI venture,the reasons why ANZ
penetrated into Vietnam market and chose Hanoi as one of its detinations.
II. Overview
1. Company profile
Established in 1835, The Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) is one of the
oldest banks in Australia. For more than 175 years of development, ANZ has become one
of the top four banks, top ten listed companies in Australia and among the top 50 banks in
the world. At 30 September 2010, its total assets reached AU$531.74 billion.
ANZ has started its operation in Vietnam since 1993. After 20 years doing business in
Vietnam, ANZ Vietnam is among the top three foreign banks in this country. ANZ Vietnam
has eight subsidiaries and transaction offices in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and one
representative office in Can Tho Province.
With the strong capital and many banking business experience achieved for more than 175
years, ANZ has developed dramatically. ANZ’s success in Vietnam continues to be widely
recognised through various awards including “The Best Retail Bank” in Vietnam by The
Asian Banker in 2008, the only Bank in Vietnam to receive “The Best Customer Oriented
Bank” in six consecutive years by Vietnam Economic Times – Golden Dragon Award, and
“The most preferred Bank” by Saigon Tiep Thi Newspaper in 2008.
2. Industry overview
Located in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is an emerging economy and on the way to
become a new tiger of the region. After the great socio-economic reform that
began 27 years ago, Vietnam changed from planned to market economy. Like any
other business sectors, the banking system had many changes and improvements.
The numbers of banks, banking products and services have been grown
dramatically. The appearance of foreign banks in Vietnam also brought new
challenges for the Vietnamese local banks .
