One of the most special days I have had during my internship at Make-A-Wish was the day
I met, Melody, my first ever wish kid. Our meeting was scheduled on a dreary late afternoon at a
Chick-Fil-A near her home. Nikki, my supervisor and I patiently waited for Melody and her
mother Carla to arrive for us to interview the two of them and determine Melody’s Wish. Prior to
this interview I had read Melody’s wish file cover-to-cover, learning about her background and
diagnosis and was thrilled to meet her in person. I felt honored to have the chance to experience
how we as Make-A-Wish representatives can impact this child’s precious life to inspire her and
her family with strength and hope during this difficult time in their lives. As Melody and Carla
walked through the door the gleam of pink glitter shoes began to light up the lobby as she got
closer and closer. We sat down and discussed their living situation, upcoming events for their
family and finally came the time to ask Melody about her wish. It became clear that Melody had
no idea why we were asking her questions and what we were talking about when we told her she
has been granted a wish. Nikki attempted to prompt Melody with questions like, “If you could
wish for anything, what would it be?” or “If you saw a shooting star, what would you ask the star
for?”
really delighted to practice my HDFS comprehension to serve this family effectively.
