Summarizing the Article
There is an Author of an Article that claims that the “raison
d’être” of college is to enlighten and nourish the students, and in
turn, the world with the culture of intellectualism. I wholeheartedly
agree, and will follow by summarizing his argument; I believe that I
can reinforce his ideas of the suggested purpose of higher
education.
The Author, Gary Gutting, is a professor of philosophy who
instructs at the University Of Notre Dame, he’s known to critically
reflect upon and share his views on recent events that appear on
the news. The article begins with the notion of the monetary, effort-
exerting, and time-sinking value and investment in college, and if
the end result is worth it for those who attend. He presents
evidence from a nationally representative survey which reports that
college lends its hand in the sense that it excites intellectual
growth, maturity, and career preparation, with the majority
agreeing that college as an investment has done them good; even
with the introduction of the presented data showcasing the bene.ts
of college, the professor disagrees with the traditional structure of
college itself and its accessibility.
Professor Gutting shows opposition to the traditional
foundations the majority of colleges are built upon. His .rst
opposition is the notion of “accessibility” and how due to the lack of
it, higher education is a “failure”. To extend upon the former, he
considers the entrance into college (awed because not only is it
expensive most of the time, but that many colleges hold a very
“unfair” policy for admitting students into their program. Another
(aw is the deadweight that many universities (u) up their
institution with instead of focusing on higher education; these
“unnecessary extras” are sports, posh dorms, student centers, and
administrators that don’t bring anything of worth to the plate.
The professor’s dismay is highlighted by his concerns on what
the college experience should be, and most importantly, the quality
of it. He says that the current method of teaching the University
curriculum is one where the subjects are seen mostly as “boring” by
those who take the class, and actually valued if they’re directly
related to the .eld that the students take an interest in;
