INT. SAPPHIRE’S BEDROOM – MORNING
The room is quiet and still. Clothing, books, and other
school supplies can be seen tucked away neatly.Soccer cleats
and a ball are stacked in a sports duffle.
Participation Awards hang on the walls and trophies scatter
across shelves. A Vacuum can be heard off.
The annoying buzzing of an Alarm clock breaks the silence.
SAPPHIRE (15-20) is sprawled across her sequined bed
drooling over the pillows stuffed under her head.
She reaches for the bedside table and flails around knocking
!books and jewelry onto the floor. She reaches her phone and
deactivates the alarm. She tosses the phone back towards the
nightstand. She misses and it skips onto the floor. Sapphire
rolls over.
SAPPHIRE
CARMEN!
Sapphire lays there motionless as the drum of the vacuum
disappears. There is a slight knock at Sapphire’s door
before CARMEN (40-50) enters in a tattered old dress and a
warn discolored apron.
CARMEN
Si Senora?
Carmen crosses the room and begins tidying the mess Sapphire
made off her bedside table. Sapphire rolls over.
SAPPHIRE
Are my things ready for school yet?
CARMEN
Si Senora.
Carmen stands up with Sapphires phone and Sapphire snatches
it our of her hand. Sapphire becomes consumed in her phone.
SAPPHIRE
Good. Make sure my things are ready
for soccer tryouts.
2
CARMEN
They are by the door ready for you
when you leave.
Carmen straightens a few things on Sapphire’s desk before
she exits. Sapphire watched the door close, rolls her eyes
and gets up.
INT. SCHOOL LOCKER ROOM -AFTERNOON.
A school bell is heard off as Sapphire strolls into the
ladies locker room in her pressed dress and heels.
The room is filled with 30 or so SOCCER PLAYERS dressed in
plain t-shirts, lose hanging shorts, knee high socks
covering shin guards, and cleats. Among them is NICOLE
(15-20).
NICOLE
Sapphire! Where have you been? We
start in 5.
Sapphire sits and checks her phone
SAPPHIRE
Don’t worry! We never start on
time. Besides, its not the new
coach is going to cut me.
Nicole and the other players exit as Sapphire continues on
her phone.
EXT. SOCCERFILED – AFTERNOON.
The soccer players run laps around the field as Sapphire
strolls up to the field in leggings and a fitted tank top.
Her cleats hang from her bag. The COACH (30-40) looks up
from his clipboard at Sapphire.
COACH
You’re late. Name?
SAPPHIRE
Sapphire. I was last years captain.
3
COACH
Right, where is your gear?
Sapphire looks at herself confused. She sits to pull on her
cleats.
COACH
Tomorrow come dressed to play or
don’t bother showing up. Now go
catch up.
Sapphire ties her cleats and takes her time getting up. She
catches the group and maintains a slow jog behind them.
The Coach shakes his head, makes a note on his clipboard and
