How to Sew a Button: Step by Step Instructions
Materials Needed:
• Button: any four or two-holed button would work best.
• Thread: choose a thread that is the same color as the thread that is used to sew the
seams of your existing garment.
• Needle: any standard this sewing needle will work.
• Cutting tool: scissors, a knife, seam ripper tool, or something else that is sharp can be
used to cut the excess thread.
Step 1: The first thing that needs to be done is treading the needle. To complete this step,
simply put the thread through the eye of the needle. Next, pull the thread until there is about
12 inches of thread. You will need about 24 inches of thread in total because the thread will be
doubled over. Now cut the end of the thread so that it is even with the other side.
*Caution: if using a thick or stiff fabric, you may need to use a thimble to push the needle
through without injuring yourself.
Step 2: the two ends of the thread must be tied in a knot. This can be accomplished by tying a
basic square knot.
Then, trim off the excess thread.
