How the environment around you including different stages of your life help you
to shape your identity?
So far, I have finished the book Ceremony. In fact, I have realized that the whole Tayo's journey
is his self- inquiry. His ceremony is the way he approaches his inquiry. Especially since he never
knew his father and was abandoned by his mother at the age of four, Tayo encounters great
difficulty in negotiating his mixed identity and experience. He explores different stages of his
life. Representation of the environment in the book is meaningful, especially transitions from his
childhood to the Battlefield where his life completely changes. Unlike his friends, however, he
often finds the white ways of life faulty and continues to respect and to believe in the Native
American traditions he learns from his family as well. I have found a connection with him
because even though I moved to Latvia, I have not lost my Russian identity. I have still the same
Russian identity. Both of us are separated from our families and communities. As an
observation, Tayo's acceptance of the Native American mythical world allows him to benefit
